This is the Sony 500mm f/4 G SSM lens, a fast telephoto prime but for Sony A mount. The new FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS will set the bar for sports photos in the a7 and a9 lens line up Today the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens has been announced. It fills a whole in the FE lens line up for the Sony a7 and a9 cameras. It’s a hole that seemed to grow when the Sony a9 was announced – arguably the most capable camera for shooting the sort of action that such a fast telephoto lens like the 400mm f/2.8 is primarily designed for. Currently the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 G OSS lens is the closest FE offering to the newly announced 400mm f/2.8 lens, but that has half the reach. Existing a7 and a9 shooters currently need to use Sony A mount lenses via an adaptor to get the sort of speed and reach that the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 lens offers. Sony A mount telephoto lenses include the 500mm f/4 G SSM which retails at around £11,000. You also have the 300mm f/2.8 G SSM II at £7,500 and the 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II at £2,270. SONY FE ... Andrew Hall uses ferrofluid and sound waves to create captivating, abstract photography Photographer Andrew Hall experiments with how liquids and gases interact with each other, using other influences such as sound waves and magnetic fields to produce abstract photographs. To create the effect he pours ferrofluid, which has nanoparticles of magnetic material suspended in it, into a container three millimetres deep. Then he applies a magnetic field underneath while adding drops of pigment, such as paint or ink, which mixes with the fluid. "If the magnet's close, the fluid tends to go into spikes, but as I move it away, it morphs into the beautiful organic pattern you see here," Hall says. In another series, Shooting Music, he plays with the same idea but the liquid, usually water, morphs in response to sound waves played through a speaker. Sometimes the music will be melodic; other times Hall will play a single, humming tone, causing the liquid to vibrate. "It kind of dances with the music. It's staggering stuf ... Read more » |
You could win a Panasonic Lumix GX800 Mirrorless camera in our Summer Pix 18 competition in association with Harvey Norman
Catching a perfect moment in time. photograph: Nick Bradshaw Summer sunlight brings beautiful colours, atmospheric skies and beautiful landscapes, but it also brings challenges: harsh shadows under the eyes, squinting, endless, samey sunsets. Generally the most beautiful summer light is to be found early morning and late evening, during the hour after sunrise and before sunset. At other times of the day, the best light is to be found in the shadows, especially if the sun is beating ... Read more » |

When using telephoto and macro lenses, it is often desirable to get tighter framing on a subject that is being photographed. One of the main reasons is to magnify the subject and improve its detail in order to show it best to the viewer, but another reason could be related to improved framing and composition – by focusing tightly on the subject, it is often possible to remove the visual clutter surrounding the subject, which ultimately simplifies and enhances composition. Although photographers can often simply move closer to their subjects to get tighter framing, sometimes it is physically impossible to do that due to the nature of the subject (such as when photographing wildlife), or when action is taking place at a particular distance (such as when photographing sports activities). In such situations, a teleconverter can come into the rescue. While teleconverters can be incredibly useful, they also have a few rather serious disadvantages that can lead to increased blur and loss of sharpness. Let’s take a look at what a teleconverter is and go over its advantages and ... Read more » |

WHAT DO YOU get for your money? That’s the question everyone looking to buy a piece of tech asks themselves. It also happens to be the question this recurring feature will try to answer. Is it worth spending extra on high-end gear, or do you get what you need with cheaper models? Every month, we’ll look at some of the cheapest and most expensive products in a given category, testing each to see what their limits are and help you figure out when you can cheap it out, and when to plunk down some extra cash to get what you need. HI/LOW: SLR LENSESThe legendary photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson described photography as being about what he called “the decisive moment,” capturing that image frozen in time that is the essence of the subject. Although much of what Cartier-Bresson was taking about was learning to see that perfect moment, the equipment you use also plays a part in capturing it. |

Are you looking to change how you shoot your photos or video? Are you bored with your smartphone or point-and-shoot shots? Maybe you’re looking to take rapid-fire action shots of your kids playing lacrosse, baseball, or soccer. Maybe you hope to capture a distinctive portrait of your friend or loved ones and create your own work of art. Or maybe you just want to wonder the streets of a big city like a photojournalist and capture your very own decisive moments. Whatever you’re shooting, for the best results, you'll need to invest in either one of two interchangeable-lens camera systems: a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera system or a mirrorless camera system. Quality and versatility are the two main reasons these types of cameras are used by professionals. And while there are a number of pro-level models for that market, there are lots of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras that will sui ... Read more » |

There could be no better commemoration of Photoshop’s 25th anniversary than the trove of unretouched Beyoncé photos that leaked online yesterday. The photos appeared on a fan site called Beyoncé World on Wednesday morning. Within an hour, Beyoncé World had pulled them down, apparently alarmed at fans’ genuine outrage. These fans were angry not that Beyoncé had been Photoshopped so dramatically — as is often the case with these things — but that someone had dared expose her for who she actually is. Laugh lines. Blemishes. Bits of friz. All the makings of a real, human person. The problem is that 25 years after Photoshop launched, we’d much prefer manipulations of reality to reality itself. |

It can be hard to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to design trends. Design techniques come and go with the seasons, but it’s important to try to keep on top of the latest design crazes, so you don’t get left in the dust. The easiest way to do this? Read some 2018 design trends articles. Recently, I read Top Graphic Design Trends 2018: The Ultimate Guide which is an excellent source of information about current trends, upcoming trends, and trends that are passing. The author does a great job of explaining how some new visual styles are offshoots of previous popular aesthetics and others are opposing current design movements. Sometimes reading design trend articles can make you feel like you’re on a hamster wheel – running circles, getting nowhere, and chasing visual trends to no avail. Other times they can excite and inspire you to try new things and experiment. It’s not crucial that you’re ahead of the pack ... Read more » |

The beginningsThe history of the digital camera began with Eugene F. Lally of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. When he wasn't coming up with ways to create artificial gravity he was thinking about how to use a mosaic photosensor to capture digital images. His 1961 idea was to take pictures of the planets and stars while travelling through space, in order to help establish the astronauts' position. Unfortunately, as with Texas Instrument employee Willis Adcock's filmless camera (US patent 4,057,830) in 1972, the technology had yet to catch up with the concept. ombining a super telephoto length, bright aperture, and lightweight design, this FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens for Sony E-mount cameras is ideal for sports, wildlife, and nature photographers. Weighing in at just 6.4 lb, this lens is incredibly portable for glass of its size. There are lenses which are traditionally considered to be "portrait lenses," such as fast 50mm, 85mm and 105mm primes. There are, of course, many other lenses you can use to capture nice portraits, such as 24-70mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms. Tony and Chelsea Northrup decided to do a portrait shoot with a very different kind of lens, a Nikon 600mm f/4super telephoto prime. How does this $12,000 lens stack up as a portrait prime? Well, we know that it's a very sharp lens, so that won't be an issue, but as we can see very early in the video below, there are some challenges. Firstly, it’s not easy to handhold. Secondly, you need to be so far away from your subject that communication can be challenging. Obviously this portrait shoot is mostly for the fun and novelty of it, but it's worthwhile to consider non-traditional lenses for portraiture. For example ... Read more » |
