Last week, there was rain in the desert. I was so surprised to visit some of the driest places in America – Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Canyonlands, and more – and see them under storms and fog rather than the blue sky. It’s not “good weather” by most definitions, but it was perfect for landscape photography.
The World Photography Organisation is pleased to announce the category winners and shortlist in the Open competition of the Sony World Photography Awards 2023, recognising the best single shots from 2022.
Over 415,000 images from over 200 countries and territories were submitted to the Sony World Photography Awards 2023 and over 200,000 were entered into the Open competition. Quick question: what’s more complicated, buying a house or getting married? Answer: neither, it’s buying a camera! That’s right, and I wrote this guide because if you don’t go about it right, then one day you’ll realize you’ve made a horrible mistake and you’ll give up photography. Okay, that could be an exaggeration. The truth is, buying a camera is quite easy once you know a few essential details.
What to Look for in a Camera
People say all cameras are good these days, and that’s definitely more true than it’s ever been. Pretty much any camera made in the last few years can produce amazing pictures, and if you had to use a random camera, chances are you could make it work.
I remember when I was starting out in photography how I looked upon the Nikon D3X in wonder. I could never afford it, but 24 megapixels! Can you imagine? Of course, some medium format cameras at the time had more, but they were as far away from me as the moon.
Now 24 megapixels is the baseline instead of an expensive maximum. 45, 60, and even 100 megapixels are within reach at lower prices than ever, and the trend isn’t really slowing down.
Even so, for 99% of photographers, pixel counts are high enough at this point. Maybe they have been for a while. As Jason recently wrote, a 50 megapixel camera is capable of about a 32×48” print (AKA 1.2 meters wide) without apparent pixelation for a typical viewe

Happy Mother’s Day Sunday to our Photography Life readers! Starting this week, instead of a roundup of just the sales and deals in the photography world, I’ll share the biggest photography news with you as well. Interesting things are happening this week with Capture One, Nikon, Canon, and more.
Filmmakers Susanna Kosa and Dennis Schmelz were independently planning on taking a break from their busy schedules on the picturesque island of Sardinia. When we approached them to see if they would be kind enough to test the new FE 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master Mk II, they both agreed that the chance to be among the first to try the new lens was too appealing and took time out of their holiday schedules to craft the beautiful film, Carolina.
Susanna was the driving force behind the film itself and you can find her thoughts below. Dennis captured the shoot and provided all the behind the scenes imagery.
