This year marks the 40th anniversary of Tamron’s SP (Superior Performance) lens series. They elected to commemorate this special occasion by introducing what they have labeled “the ultimate Tamron lens” in the form of the new SP Tamron 35mm F/1.4 Di USD (Model F045) prime lens in Canon EF and Nikon F mounts.

The advance promotion and performance claims for this new Tamron 35mm F/1.4 lens have been prodigious, so we requested a sample to test by our own standards. We explore the question: just exactly how good is Tamron’s best lens ever?

“Go make the best lens possible.” It seems that those were the instructions given to Tamron’s design team. According to their top brass, “Tamron’s opt ... Read more »

The history of the 70-200mm is far shorter than many may suspect. With the original Canon 70-200mm f/.28L, from Canon at least, being released in 1995, many people are shocked to hear that we’ve had seven different iterations of this lens in just 23 years. And that’s only counting the Canon versions – Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina have great iterations as well. So when ... Read more »

Sony just set a new milestone in their line of full-frame mirrorless cameras, with the introduction of the 61MP A7R IV that offers a unique combination of high-resolution and “medium format image quality” in a compact, lightweight package.

The Sony A7R IV is the successor to the 42.4MP A7R III that earned our Top Clicks award in late 2017. Boasting the world’s first back-illuminated 61MP full-frame sensor, the new camera promises 15 stops of dynamic range for superb gradation from highlights to shadows, and 567 AF points covering 74% of the image area (with 325 AF points in the 26.2MP APS-C crop mode).

chinese food flatlayIf you’re looking for the best lens for food photography, you’ve come to the right place. As with a few other photography niches where it’s crucial to capture images as they look in real life (or better), an important factor to consider when shooting food is the focal length of the lens and your camera’s sensor size.

Before you purchase lenses (or any camera equipment at all, if you’re just starting out) for food photography, know that sensor size matters big time. Therefore, many professionals will tell you that investing in a full-frame camera will prove to be advantageous for virtually every photographic need.

But even if you already own a camera ... Read more »

Choosing the right lens for any genre of photographer is a minefield and getting into food photography is no exception.

In this video I go through what I believe to be the best three options for a food photography lens. Although there really is no right or wrong answer to the question of a best lens in any genre, there are certainly some lenses that spring to mind when looking to perform a set task and perhaps some focal lengths that are supposed to be the correct text book focal length, but most photographers who really stand out tend to go against the grain on this (Platon springs to mind).

Personally, I am a big fan of primes, but if you were looking for a zoom lens, then something around the 24-70 or 24-105 range would be a great starting point. But for me, when shooting still life images using a prime is perfect. You don’t need the versatility as everything is hopefully staying put, but you can certainly benefit from the image quality improvements that primes give over zooms. There is also an improved aesthetic from almost all primes over equally pr ... Read more »

- Which is the best action camera for you to choose?

GoPro make some of the best action cameras around - and, of course, they're probably the best known brand out there. It's still the best all-round experience for both professional video makers and the average consumer. This begs the question: which GoPro should you buy?

What GoPro offers

GoPro's entire lineup has gone through something of a streamlining process and complete refresh over the past couple of years. Whereas prior years saw various models, including a budget, tiny Session, the company now only offers versions of the flagship Hero series and the 360-degree Fusion.

It has moved around its product line quite a bit to do this - GoPro replaced a budget-orientated Hero with the full HD capable Hero 7 White, then replaced the Hero 5 with the Hero 7 Silv ... Read more »

This is the Sony 500mm f/4 G SSM lens, a fast telephoto prime but for Sony A mount. The new FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS will set the bar for sports photos in the a7 and a9 lens line up

Today the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens has been announced. It fills a whole in the FE lens line up for the Sony a7 and a9 cameras.

It’s a hole that seemed to grow when the Sony a9 was announced – arguably the most capable camera for shooting the sort of action that such a fast telephoto lens like the 400mm f/2.8 is primarily designed for.

Currently the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 G OSS lens is the closest FE offering to the newly announced 400mm f/2.8 lens, but that has half the reach.

Existing a7 and a9 shooters currently need to use Sony A mount lenses via an adaptor to get the sort of speed and reach that the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 lens offers.

Sony A mount telephoto lenses include the 500mm f/4 G SSM which retails at around £11,000. You also have the 300mm f/2.8 G SSM II at £7,500 and the 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II at £2,270.

Andrew Hall uses ferrofluid and sound waves to create captivating, abstract photography

Photographer Andrew Hall experiments with how liquids and gases interact with each other, using other influences such as sound waves and magnetic fields to produce abstract photographs.

To create the effect he pours ferrofluid, which has nanoparticles of magnetic material suspended in it, into a container three millimetres deep. Then he applies a magnetic field underneath while adding drops of pigment, such as paint or ink, which mixes with the fluid. "If the magnet's close, the fluid tends to go into spikes, but as I move it away, it morphs into the beautiful organic pattern you see here," Hall says.

In another series, Shooting Music, he plays with the same idea but the liquid, usually water, morphs in response to sound waves played through a speaker. Sometimes the music will be melodic; other times Hall will play a single, humming tone, causing the liquid to vibrate. "It kind of dances with the music. It's staggering stuf ... Read more »
