19.34.27 Struggling with poor video quality on Zoom calls? You can now use your Sony DSLR as a webcam
By Rohan Abraham Synopsis Sony has come out with a software patch that transforms its DSLR cameras into functional webcams.Conventional wisdom would suggest that demand for digital cameras would’ve tapered in the past few months, with people rarely venturing outdoors. However, the pandemic-induced lockdown has created a new opportunity for camera manufacturers. Following the likes of Cannon and Fujifilm, Sony has come out with a software patch that transforms its mirrorless, compact DSLR cameras into functional webcams. This feature can be activated using the Imaging Edge Webcam app for Windows 10. It is compatible with models from the 2014 A7S to the more recent A6600 and A7R IV models. It also works for DSLRs from the 2015 A68 to newer models, as well as compact cameras like the RX100 IV and later additions to the family. To utilize this function, users will have to select the camera model from the drop down menu and download the software and install it on the desktop or laptop computers. The camera’s settings can be adjusted on the device and connected to the PC via a USB cable. Using the software, users can launch video conferencing apps like Zoom, WebEx, MS Teams, and select their Sony camera from the available webcam options in the app’s interface.
