Attaining fast and precise focus is a primary goal of just about every photographer, regardless of the type of images they shoot. When soft photos result with regularity, the first thing that comes to mind is, "I must be doing something wrong."
It's possible, however, that blaming your technique for this problem is missing the point, because sometimes the issue results from a defective or improperly performing lens. If you think this may be your problem, watch the tutorial below before sending a lens in for evaluation and repair, because you'll learn several effective ways to check the lens yourself.

That said, it is with great difficulty that we announce that we have decided to cancel our in-person event at the Javits Convention Center in New York, NY, scheduled for September 30-October 2, 2021.
The cancellation of the live event is due to developments regarding the ongoing progression of the COVID-19 pandemic and related company-imposed travel restrictions affecting customers’ ability to gather in New York for PHOTOPLUS. While the decision to cancel is a disappointing one, we recognize the extreme demands that the COVID-19 pandemic has placed on establishments, and particularly small businesses, in this industry..

Nothing is worse for a portrait than a subject who looks irritated or angry when they're supposed to be relaxed. Unless that's the angle you're going for, and even then, you still need your model to look engaged in a photo. Otherwise, the image will look awkward.
The worst expression of all for a portrait, according to photographer Brett Seeley, is an expression known by the acronym RBF, aka Resting B*tch Face. In the humorous but instructive video below, Seeley explains "how to overcome RBF," while photographing model Kamalei Nemoto on a beach in Maui, Hawaii.

To take engaging photos, you need to be engaged with what you’re doing. Don’t just fly by on autopilot. Instead, put thought into your composition and try to make your photos as good as possible.
That starts with knowing the basics of how to compose good photos. Don’t cut off important parts of your subject with the edge of your frame. Keep your horizons level, and try to eliminate any distractions in your photo by adjusting your composition. See if your photo has a sense of balance and simplicity. And if the photo doesn’t look good on your first try, keep experimenting until you get it right.

I started in photography as a stepping stone into digital art. As with most photographers, I started taking pictures of everyone and everything. It was not fun hiking with me; I was the guy stopping every five minutes to take pictures of trees and rocks.
During that time I was mesmerized by 3D artworks and by the incredible landscapes and props other artists were creating. Even though I was eager to start creating 3D artworks, the technical difficulty and the steep learning curve kept me from it. Or at least it was a good excuse. But then… the donut tutorial came out, and then, everything changed.

We're teaming up once again with our sister publication, Digital Photo, to co-host a new photography contest. Previous contests, such as the Street Scene Photo Contest and Feather Focus Photo Contest, narrowed the scope down to a certain style or genre of photography, candid street photos for the former and bird photography for the latter in these two cases.
We would like to share the results of our investigation regarding the operation of SIGMA’s lenses for Canon EF mount, when used on the Canon EOS R5.
We have verified the operation with our SIGMA GLOBAL VISION (SGV) interchangeable lenses (Contemporary, Art, and Sports lines) for Canon EF mounts used on the“Canon EOS R5” with Canon’s mount adapter “EF-EOS R Series”, and confirmed that there were no problems with general operations such as AE, AF, and image stabilization.
Please note the following points when using our products.
1. For SGV interchangeable lenses released before 2017* , it is necessary that the lens firmware is updated to Ver.2.00 or later.
* The release year can be confirmed by the edition number (A017, C015, etc.) engraved on the lens barrel.
It would be foolish to claim that there is only one way to take a portrait, but there are some accepted norms and basic camera settings that you should understand if portraiture is to become your area of photographic interest. Remember though, as you walk down your creative path, that a portrait is more than a headshot, more than a beautiful photo of your subject; it is an opportunity to get to know someone, to have a visual conversation with a person, and to use your photographic skills to pass that understanding of the person on to the viewer.

Andrew Hall uses ferrofluid and sound waves to create captivating, abstract photography
Photographer Andrew Hall experiments with how liquids and gases interact with each other, using other influences such as sound waves and magnetic fields to produce abstract photographs.
To create the effect he pours ferrofluid, which has nanoparticles of magnetic material suspended in it, into a container three millimetres deep. Then he applies a magnetic field underneath while adding drops of pigment, such as paint or ink, which mixes with the fluid. "If the magnet's close, the fluid tends to go into spikes, but as I move it away, it morphs into the beautiful organic pattern you see here," Hall says.
In another series, Shooting Music, he plays with the same idea but the liquid, usually water, morphs in response to sound waves played through a speaker. Sometimes the music will be melodic; other times Hall will play a single, humming tone, causing the liquid to vibrate. "It kind of dances with the music. It's staggering stuf

Generally the most beautiful summer light is to be found early morning and late evening, during the hour after sunrise and before sunset. At other times of the day, the best light is to be found in the shadows, especially if the sun is beating

British photographer Alys Tomlinson won Photographer of the Year at the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards.
Image: Alys Tomlinson/2018 Sony World Photography Awards
THE WINNERS OF the Sony World Photography Awards 2018 have been announced.
The coveted Photographer of the Year title went to British photographer Alys Tomlinson, who won $25,000 for her series, Ex-Voto. The series captures the idea of pilgrimage through the landscapes of sites in France, Ireland and Poland and in still-life images of offerings that have been made at these locations.
In Ireland, Tomlinson shot at Ballyvourney, a Gaeltacht village in southwest Co Cork considered to be a pilgrimage site. Near the village is a stone slab inscribed with a Maltese Cross with a figure, believed to be a pilgrim, above it.
When I was starting in photography, I kept hearing peers and educators talking about their photographic style. I was totally lost. I had no idea what my style was, because as desperate as I was to define it, I hadn't yet discovered it. Discovered is the wrong word. My style wasn't yet.
In a lot of ways, I may be the last person qualified to talk about style. I wear the same thing every day: black v-neck, jeans, black shoes, hair in a ponytail, and an ivy cap. For events where I need to look more professional, I throw a suit jacket on top, and people are genuinely impressed that I dressed up (I love working in a field where you can get away with thi
